August 27, 2026Kylian Mbappé delivered a sensational performance at the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4–1 in their first La Liga home game of the 2026/27 season.
The victory also made José Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu even more memorable, with the Portuguese manager taking charge of a competitive home match for Real Madrid for the first time in more than 13 years.
Mbappé Takes Centre Stage
Real Sociedad caused Madrid problems during the opening stages, but Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 40th minute after Federico Valverde played him through. The French forward drove into the penalty area before producing an excellent finish.
Madrid’s advantage lasted only a few minutes, however, as Luka Sučić equalised for Real Sociedad shortly before half-time, sending the teams into the break level at 1–1.
The second half was a completely different story.
Mbappé restored Madrid’s lead in the 60th minute following a quick combination with Jude Bellingham. Eight minutes later, Bellingham played another important role, winning possession and setting up Vinícius Júnior to make it 3–1.
Mbappé then completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute, finishing Vinícius’ pass with a composed chip over goalkeeper Álex Remiro.
Mourinho Enjoys Winning Bernabéu Return
The result provided the perfect homecoming for Mourinho.
Real Madrid struggled for rhythm during parts of the first half and even received jeers from sections of the Bernabéu crowd. Mourinho responded at half-time, introducing Marc Cucurella as Madrid returned with greater intensity and attacking threat.
The transformation was immediate, with Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham combining effectively to overwhelm Real Sociedad after the break.
For Mourinho, the performance demonstrated both the quality available in his squad and the work still required if Madrid are to maintain their momentum throughout the season.
Mbappé Sends an Early Warning
Mbappé’s three goals were his first of the new La Liga campaign and provided another reminder of his importance to Real Madrid.
With Vinícius also finding the net and Bellingham supplying two assists, Madrid’s biggest attacking stars showed signs of developing into a dangerous combination.
Real Madrid have now started their league campaign with consecutive victories, following their opening win away against Espanyol.
For Mbappé, however, the night belonged to him.
A hat-trick, a convincing Real Madrid victory and Mourinho celebrating another win at the Santiago Bernabéu, it was a statement performance from Los Blancos as they look to establish themselves as early contenders for the La Liga title.
