The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the entire technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect, following the team’s disappointing 2026 campaign and failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The directive, announced by the NFF Executive Committee, affects the technical team led by head coach Justin Madugu, alongside his assistants and other members of the backroom staff. The federation’s announcement did not provide detailed reasons for the decision, but it comes after a difficult Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign and Nigeria’s subsequent failure in the World Cup qualification playoff.
🇳🇬 A DISAPPOINTING WAFCON CAMPAIGN
The Super Falcons entered the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco with enormous expectations, but their campaign was far from what Nigerian supporters expected.
Nigeria began the tournament with a 3–2 defeat to Malawi, who were making their debut in the competition. The Falcons eventually reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 1–0 to Cameroon. That defeat prevented Nigeria from securing an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria was subsequently given another opportunity to qualify through a playoff against South Africa, but the Super Falcons suffered another setback, losing 2–1 to Banyana Banyana.
The failure represents a major disappointment for a team that has traditionally been one of the dominant forces in African women’s football.
👤 WHAT NEXT FOR JUSTIN MADUGU?
Madugu has been part of the Super Falcons’ technical structure for several years. The NFF appointed him and Edwin Okon to the technical crew in November 2021 as part of an effort to reorganise the team’s coaching structure.
The federation has not yet announced a replacement or confirmed who will take temporary charge of the Super Falcons.
That decision will now be closely watched by Nigerian football supporters, especially with the national team facing the challenge of rebuilding after a difficult period.
🔎 IS CHANGING THE COACH ENOUGH?
The latest decision has also raised a bigger question about Nigerian football.
Is changing the technical crew enough to solve the problems affecting the Super Falcons?
The women’s national team has suffered a major setback, while the Super Eagles also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing their African playoff final to DR Congo on penalties.
For many Nigerian football followers, the conversation therefore goes beyond the coach.
There are questions about planning, player development, administration, technical structures, grassroots football and long-term football policy.
Removing a coach may provide an immediate response to poor results, but Nigerian football will need deeper and more sustainable solutions if the country wants its national teams to consistently compete at the highest level.
🗣️ NAIJAASPORTAINMENT VIEW
The Super Falcons deserve better.
Nigeria has an enormous pool of talented female footballers playing both at home and abroad. The responsibility now falls on the football authorities to ensure that the next technical team is selected through a clear, professional and long-term process.
The focus should not simply be on finding someone to occupy the coaching position.
The priority should be to build a technical structure capable of developing players, creating a clear playing philosophy, preparing properly for major tournaments and restoring confidence in the Super Falcons.
The NFF has made its first decision by asking the technical crew to step down.
Now, Nigerian football supporters will be watching closely to see what comes next.
