The inspiring football journey of the Spanish midfielder who dreamed of freeing his mother from manual labour

There are football stories that begin with expensive academies, famous parents or privileged backgrounds.

And then there are stories like that of Fabián Ruiz.

His story began in Los Palacios y Villafranca, a small town in Seville, Spain, where a young boy developed a love for football while his family battled financial difficulties.

Today, Ruiz is a European champion, a Spanish international and a midfielder who has lifted some of the biggest trophies in world football.

But behind all those medals is a woman who spent years working tirelessly so her son could chase his football dream.

Her name is Chari Peña — Fabián Ruiz’s mother.

And for the Spanish midfielder, becoming a professional footballer was never only about becoming famous.

At one point, his biggest dream was much simpler:

To make sure his mother never had to work physically hard again.

THE BOY FROM LOS PALACIOS

Fabián Ruiz Peña was born on 3 April 1996 in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Seville.

Football became part of his life from an early age.

He initially played in a local football training class rather than a formal professional club. According to Ruiz’s recent recollection, his talent became noticeable when he participated in a tournament and a Real Betis scout spotted him.

That moment changed his life.

At only eight years old, Ruiz joined the Real Betis youth academy.

He was very small when he arrived.

So small, in fact, that some of the coaches initially joked that he would spend his time sitting in the sand rather than dominating the football pitch.

But the boy soon showed them something different.

He had discipline, technical ability and an understanding of the game that made him stand out.

His football education had begun.

THE MOTHER WHO NEVER STOPPED

But while Fabián was beginning his football journey, his mother was fighting a completely different battle.

His parents separated when he was around 12 years old, leaving Chari to take responsibility for raising her children.

There were three children to care for, household expenses, education and the demanding task of taking Fabián to football training.

The family was struggling financially.

Ruiz has recalled that his mother worked from Monday to Sunday doing cleaning work to support the family.

An aunt also provided important assistance during those difficult years.

For Fabián, football training was not simply a short journey to a nearby pitch.

His mother had to make sure he could get to Betis, often carrying the responsibility of transportation while working to provide for the family.

THEN BETIS OPENED ANOTHER DOOR

As Fabián continued progressing through the Betis academy, the club became aware of the difficult circumstances surrounding his family.

Betis eventually helped his mother find work as a cleaner at the club’s training facilities.

It was an extraordinary situation.

The young footballer was developing his talent inside the same football environment where his mother worked to support the family.

She cleaned the sports complex and dressing-room areas while her son trained to become a professional footballer.

But there was an important reason behind the arrangement.

Her work schedule allowed her to clean in the mornings and still have time to take Fabián to training in the afternoons.

Football and work became part of the same daily routine.

THE CAR, THE TRAINING GROUND AND HIS MOTHER’S VOICE

As Fabián remembers it, some of the most powerful memories of his childhood are connected to that period.

When first-team training eventually moved to the morning, his mother could no longer drive him to training in the afternoon.

Instead, they would travel together to the Betis sports city in the morning.

His mother would go inside to clean.

Fabián would sometimes sleep in the car while waiting for training.

Then his mother would finish her work, walk to the car and wake him.

“Fabián, it’s time for training.”

He would get out and head towards the football pitch.

After training, he could wait for his mother to finish work before they returned home together, or sometimes take the bus home.

It was a simple routine.

But behind that routine was an enormous sacrifice.

WHEN HIS MOTHER’S JOB BECAME EMBARRASSING

There was another side to the story.

As a teenager, Fabián admits that he sometimes felt embarrassed.

His mother was cleaning the same football facilities where he was developing alongside professional players and club stars.

She could even be around the dressing-room area.

For a young footballer trying to establish himself among senior players, it was not always easy emotionally.

He has admitted that he initially did not want people to know that the woman working around the dressing room was his mother.

But that feeling did not last forever.

Something changed.The boy grew into a man.

And the embarrassment eventually became pride.

THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The biggest emotional turning point came when Fabián left Spain for Italy.

In 2018, he moved from Real Betis to Napoli.

For the first time, he was living far away from his family and experiencing professional football in another country.

That distance made him understand something he had previously taken for granted.

He missed his mother.He began to understand just how much she had done for him.

The woman who drove him to training.

The woman who worked long hours.

The woman who cleaned the football facilities.

The woman who helped make his dream possible.

Fabián suddenly understood the true value of having her beside him every day.

”Then came the moment that Fabián says was one of the happiest moments of his life.

He told his mother that she no longer needed to work.

His dream was not simply to buy himself expensive things.

His dream was to free his mother from physical labour.

He wanted her to rest.

He wanted her to enjoy life.

He wanted the woman who had sacrificed so much for his football career to finally benefit from the success that her sacrifice had helped create.

For Fabián, being able to tell his mother “Don’t work anymore” was emotionally comparable to winning a major football trophy.

That tells you what his football journey has always meant to him.

NAPOLI: THE NEXT STAGE

The move to Napoli became a major step in Ruiz’s professional career.

He joined the Italian club in 2018 and developed into an important midfielder.

His ability to control possession, pass accurately and contribute both defensively and offensively made him an increasingly important player.

At Napoli, he also experienced European football at the highest level.His performances eventually helped him earn recognition beyond Italy.

In 2020, he celebrated the Coppa Italia with Napoli.

But the next major chapter was already waiting.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN AND THE BIGGEST STAGES

In 2022, Ruiz moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

The move placed him at one of Europe’s biggest clubs and gave him the opportunity to compete regularly for major domestic and European honours.

At PSG, he became an important part of the midfield and worked under Spanish coach Luis Enrique.

His trophy collection continued to grow.

But his greatest club achievements would come on the biggest European stage.

PSG won the Champions League final against Inter Milan in 2025, with Ruiz starting the match.

A year later, he was again in the starting XI when PSG faced Arsenal in the 2026 Champions League final.

PSG eventually won the final on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time.

From sleeping in a car while his mother cleaned a football training centre to starting Champions League finals for one of Europe’s biggest clubs — the journey had travelled an extraordinary distance.

SPAIN: FROM YOUTH FOOTBALL TO WORLD CUP GLORY

Ruiz’s international career also developed step by step.

He represented Spain at youth level before becoming part of the senior national team.

In 2019, he helped Spain win the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and was named the tournament’s player of the tournament.

He later became part of Spain’s senior team under Luis de la Fuente.

He contributed to Spain’s 2023 UEFA Nations League triumph and was also part of the team that won Euro 2024.

Then came another extraordinary chapter.

On 19 July 2026, Ruiz won the FIFA World Cup with Spain after a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.

It was his 50th appearance for Spain.THE SAME BOY, A MUCH BIGGER STAGE

Think about the journey.

A little boy from Los Palacios.

A mother working long hours to keep the family going.

For Fabián Ruiz, one of the most important victories happened away from the football pitch.

It happened when he earned enough through football to tell his mother that she could finally stop working.

Fabián has said that if he ever wins the Ballon d’Or, he would dedicate the honour to his mother.

That sentiment tells the story better than statistics ever could.

Football gave Fabián Ruiz fame, trophies and international recognition.

But before the world knew his name, there was a mother who knew his dream.

She drove him to training.

She worked around the football club.

She cleaned the environment where her son was learning to become a professional.
