HOWARD WEBB ADMITS VAR ERROR IN MAN CITY’S DERBY WIN
The controversial decision from Sunday’s Manchester derby has taken another turn after Howard Webb, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited refereeing chief, acknowledged that VAR made an error in allowing Erling Haaland’s winning goal to stand.
Haaland’s 60th-minute goal was initially ruled offside but was overturned after a VAR review. However, the review failed to properly consider Enzo Fernandez’s position and involvement in the attacking move.
Webb described the mistake as a case of VAR having excessive focus on Haaland while failing to assess the wider situation.
The VAR officials involved, Matt Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus, have been stood down from Premier League appointments until after the international break.
The admission has added another major talking point to City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
