AMORIM VOWS NOT TO REPEAT MANCHESTER UNITED MISTAKES AS AC MILAN ADAPT TACTICALLY

Ruben Amorim has admitted that lessons from his difficult spell at Manchester United are already influencing his approach at AC Milan, insisting he cannot repeat the same tactical mistakes at his new club.

The Portuguese coach made the admission after AC Milan ended a three-match winless run with a convincing 3-0 victory over Lecce in Serie A on Sunday.

Amorim acknowledged that Milan had become too rigid in their positional structure during recent matches, restricting the freedom of his players. Against Lecce, he made adjustments and allowed the team to move with greater flexibility.

The change produced a more effective performance, with Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira getting on the scoresheet.

Speaking after the match, Amorim explained that his experience at Manchester United had taught him the importance of adapting his tactical approach to the characteristics of his players.

“What I felt in the last games is the same that I felt at Manchester United, and I cannot make the same mistake,” Amorim said.

The 41-year-old coach was heavily associated with a three-man defensive system during his time at Old Trafford. Reuters reports that he used a back three in 45 of his 47 Premier League matches in charge of United, winning 15 of those games. United finished 15th in the 2024/25 Premier League season, their lowest-ever final position in the competition.

Amorim now says he understands that a manager must be prepared to change when the players available do not perfectly suit a particular system.

“Sometimes we don’t have the perfect characteristics to play in that way, and if we don’t have it, we have to adapt,” he explained.

He stressed that this does not mean completely abandoning his preferred football. Instead, Milan need to develop different ways of building attacks and controlling matches.

“In another game we can return to the build-up with three, the important thing is to have different ways of playing,” he added.

The victory over Lecce also represented a significant response from Milan after consecutive Serie A draws against Juventus and Lazio and a 2-0 Europa League defeat to Benfica.

Amorim’s comments suggest that his Manchester United experience has become part of the learning process as he attempts to establish himself at San Siro.

Rather than insisting on one structure regardless of circumstances, the Milan coach says he wants his players to have enough freedom to exploit spaces, make runs behind defensive lines and create different problems for opponents.

“The freedom in the players, the movement, especially the runs behind… we are not just a team that has the ball, we are a team that is dangerous,” Amorim said after the Lecce victory.

Milan’s next scheduled Serie A fixture is against Sassuolo on 11th October, giving Amorim time to continue developing the tactical flexibility he says he lacked during parts of his Manchester United tenure.
