VILLAS-BOAS REVEALS “BACKSTABBING” CULTURE AT CHELSEA AND OPENS UP ON DI MATTEO BETRAYAL

Former Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas has opened up about his turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge, describing elements of the club’s culture during his time in charge and revealing his disappointment over what happened after his dismissal.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast hosted by former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, Villas-Boas revisited his controversial 2011/12 campaign and discussed his relationship with several senior players and members of his coaching staff.

VILLAS-BOAS ON ROBERTO DI MATTEO

One of the most striking revelations concerned his former assistant, Roberto Di Matteo.

Villas-Boas said he was disappointed that he was not informed before Di Matteo was appointed as Chelsea’s manager following his dismissal.

He described the situation as something he had not expected from someone who had worked closely with him.

Di Matteo would go on to lead Chelsea to the 2012 UEFA Champions League title and FA Cup after taking over during the same season in which Villas-Boas was sacked.

THE JOHN TERRY PLANE CONTROVERSY

Villas-Boas also responded to John Terry’s long-standing account of a disagreement over seating arrangements during Chelsea’s pre-season tour.

Terry had previously claimed that senior Chelsea players objected to academy players being given first-class seats while established stars were placed in economy, describing it as an early sign of tension between the manager and the dressing room.

Villas-Boas has now disputed parts of that version.

He explained that the issue was actually about the limited number of first-class/business-class seats, saying he did not want to choose some senior players over others.

His solution was to place some academy players in the premium section while the senior squad travelled in business class. Villas-Boas also said Terry did not approach him at the time to complain about the arrangement

A DIFFICULT SPELL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

Villas-Boas arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2011 after making his name at Porto, but his tenure lasted only eight months.

He was dismissed in March 2012 after a difficult run of results, with Chelsea eventually finishing sixth in the Premier League.

Ironically, Chelsea went on to win the Champions League and FA Cup later that season under Di Matteo.

Looking back, Villas-Boas acknowledged that his approach could have been different, particularly when dealing with a dressing room containing established stars.

He also recalled disciplinary decisions involving senior players, including Ashley Cole, as he attempted to establish his authority.

VILLAS-BOAS TELLS HIS SIDE OF THE STORY

More than a decade after his departure, Villas-Boas’ comments offer his perspective on some of the controversies that surrounded his short Chelsea reign.

His account differs from some of the recollections previously given by former Chelsea players, particularly regarding the plane incident and the relationship between the manager and senior members of the squad.
