LEGEND STORIES: HARUNA ILERIKA — THE SOCCER WIZARD WHO COULD DRIBBLE HIS WAY INTO NIGERIAN FOOTBALL HISTORY
By Olawale Hamzat Top Striker
There are footballers whose names become part of history because of the trophies they won. There are others remembered because of the goals they scored.
And then there are those whose football was so magical that the memory of how they played becomes bigger than the statistics.
Haruna Ilerika belonged to that rare category.
The diminutive left-footed wizard of Nigerian football was not simply a footballer. To those who watched him in his prime, he was entertainment, imagination and unpredictability rolled into one.
Segun Odegbami, one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers and football writers, described Ilerika as one of the greatest student footballers in Nigerian history, while contemporary tributes have remembered him as a soccer magician and one of the country’s greatest dribblers.
For a generation that watched Nigerian football before the explosion of television coverage and the modern global game, Haruna Ilerika was a superstar.
THE BOY WHO MADE AN UNKNOWN SCHOOL FAMOUS
Haruna Olatunji Ilerika was born on October 27, 1949. Contemporary Nigerian tributes place his birthplace at the family home on Bornu Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
His football journey was already gathering momentum while he was still in school.
He attended Lagos City College, where he developed his reputation as an outstanding footballer and even served as an acting coach before moving to Zumratul Islammiyyah Grammar School.
That move would change the history of the Lagos Principals’ Cup.
In 1970, Ilerika led the relatively unknown Zumratul Islammiyyah Grammar School to victory in the prestigious Principals’ Cup.
It was not an ordinary achievement.
Zumratul was not one of the traditional football giants dominating school football at the time. Yet with Ilerika at the centre of their attack, the school defeated some of the most established names in Lagos school football.
Kings College.
Igbobi College.
St. Gregory’s College.
St. Finbarr’s College.
The victory transformed Zumratul into a household name and turned Ilerika into one of the biggest attractions in Lagos school football.
Segun Odegbami later recalled the extraordinary impact of the Principals’ Cup era, noting that Ilerika alone could attract huge crowds to watch Zumratul play.
That tells us something important about the football culture of that era.
The football field was a theatre — and Ilerika was one of its greatest performers.
“HARUNA, PLEASE HAVE MERCY!”
Ilerika’s dribbling was so entertaining that supporters reportedly developed songs around his performances.
One of the chants associated with him was:
“Haruna dakun jọwọ, ye ge wọn lege sere.”
It was essentially a plea for the magician to have mercy on his opponents.
He was that kind of player.
He could receive the ball, slow the game down, invite an opponent toward him and then suddenly disappear past the defender.
His small frame made him difficult to predict.
His left foot was his magic wand.
His close control was exceptional.
And his confidence was enormous.
Tributes to Ilerika repeatedly highlight the same characteristics: quick feet, close control, intelligent movement and body feints that left defenders guessing.
THE 30-SECOND GOAL THAT OPENED THE DOOR TO THE GREEN EAGLES
One of the most fascinating stories from his school days concerns a match against Igbobi College in 1970.
According to a later account attributed to Ilerika himself, he predicted that he would score very early in the match and told spectators that anyone who arrived late might miss his goal.
He was not joking.
He scored after just 30 seconds.
That goal became part of his legend and was followed by his invitation into the national-team set-up the following year.
From schoolboy football, the young magician was moving towards the biggest stage available to a Nigerian footballer.
STATIONERY STORES: WHERE THE WIZARD BECAME A SUPERSTAR
In 1971, Ilerika joined Stationery Stores FC of Lagos, the famous club affectionately known as the darling club of Lagos.
The move was the beginning of one of the most memorable chapters of his football career.
He had previously spent time with Metal Construction FC in Apapa, but Stationery Stores gave his talent a much bigger platform.
Stationery Stores was not simply a football club.
It was a phenomenon.
The club had a passionate following and players were treated almost like celebrities. Supporters could go to extraordinary lengths to show their appreciation, with stories of fans and local businesses providing players with goods and services.
And Ilerika fitted perfectly into that environment.
Every time he touched the ball, something seemed possible.
A defender could be beaten.
A crowd could erupt.
A goal could arrive unexpectedly.
THE GREEN EAGLES AND THE 1973 ALL-AFRICA GAMES
Ilerika’s national-team career took him into the Green Eagles, as Nigeria’s senior men’s national team was then known.
His first major international triumph came on home soil at the 1973 Second All-Africa Games in Lagos.
Nigeria won the football gold medal, and Ilerika played an important role in the team’s success.
One moment from the final has survived in Nigerian football folklore.
With the match delicately poised, Ilerika reportedly received the ball and went on a breathtaking run, dribbling past three Guinean defenders before releasing the ball for Sunny Oyarekhua, who finished the move.
It was the kind of football that made spectators fall in love with him.
He did not merely play football.
He performed it.
Contemporary and retrospective tributes continue to single out that moment as one of the defining images of Ilerika’s career.
THE BATTLE OF DIRE-DAWA
If Lagos 1973 established Ilerika as a continental star, the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations in Ethiopia cemented his reputation.
Nigeria travelled to Ethiopia and eventually claimed the bronze medal.
The tournament became particularly memorable for Ilerika because of his performance against Egypt.
Nigeria defeated Egypt 3–2, with Ilerika scoring twice. Historical match records list both of Nigeria’s goals against Egypt among his international goals at the tournament.
His performance became part of the mythology surrounding the Nigerian team at what became known as the Battle of Dire-Dawa.
And there was another story from Ethiopia that captured just how spectacularly Ilerika had impressed spectators.
According to several retrospective accounts, an Ethiopian woman watching the Nigerian team was so impressed by his performance that she presented him with her necklace.
Whether every detail of the story can be independently verified today or not, the tale has endured as part of the folklore surrounding one of Nigeria’s most entertaining footballers.
A PLACE IN THE 1976 AFCON TEAM OF THE TOURNAMENT
Ilerika’s performances in Ethiopia were not merely remembered by Nigerian supporters.
He was selected in the team of the tournament at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.
That recognition placed him among the best players at the tournament.
For a Nigerian footballer of that era, it was an extraordinary achievement.
THE OLYMPIC DREAM THAT NEVER FULLY MATERIALISED
Ilerika was also connected with Nigeria’s Olympic ambitions.
However, the Olympic journey of that generation was complicated by the political boycott surrounding the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Nigeria withdrew from the Games along with several other African countries, meaning the players who had earned their place in the Olympic team were denied the opportunity to compete. Retrospective accounts of Ilerika’s career specifically remember him among those affected.
It was another reminder that a footballer’s career can sometimes be shaped by events far beyond the football pitch.
“I WOULD HAVE BEEN DEPORTED FOR DRIBBLING EUROPEANS TO DEATH”
Perhaps no quotation captures Ilerika’s personality better than his famous humorous reflection on what might have happened had he played professional football in Europe.
He reportedly joked:
“Had I gone to Europe, I would have been deported for dribbling the Europeans to death.”
It was classic Ilerika.
Confidence.
Humour.
And an enormous belief in his ability.
But behind the joke was a serious football truth.
Those who watched him believed he possessed extraordinary natural ability.
Adokiye Amiesimaka described him as “sheer magic”, while Odegbami referred to him as a soccer magician.
THE LEFT FOOT, THE LOW CENTRE OF GRAVITY AND THE MAGIC
Ilerika’s physical appearance did not immediately suggest the kind of dominance he would have over defenders.
He was small.
But that became part of his advantage.
His low centre of gravity allowed him to change direction quickly.
His close control meant he could keep the ball close to his body.
His left foot gave him an extra dimension.
And his intelligence allowed him to read defenders before they could read him.
As one tribute put it, his diminutive stature concealed an enormous dribbling ability, while his alertness, speed of foot and body-swerving movements made him exceptionally difficult to stop.
A FOOTBALLER WITHOUT THE MODERN STATISTICS
Today, footballers are measured through enormous amounts of data.
Goals.
Assists.
Expected goals.
Pass completion.
Progressive carries.
Dribbles.
Distance covered.
But Ilerika played in an era when such statistics were poorly documented.
Consequently, much of his legacy survives through eyewitness memories, newspaper reports, photographs and stories passed from one generation to another.
That is one reason his legend is so fascinating.
People who watched him do not need a database to tell them what they saw.
They remember.
WHY ILERIKA’S STORY MATTERS TODAY
Haruna Ilerika’s story is bigger than nostalgia.
It reminds Nigeria of what its old Academicals system once achieved.
The secondary-school football structure produced players who could move from school football into the national team. Odegbami has repeatedly argued that the old system was a major pathway for developing Nigerian football talent.
Ilerika was one of its greatest products.
He was proof that a talented boy could emerge from school football, become a national star and eventually help Nigeria win major international honours.
His story therefore belongs not only in the history books.
It belongs in today’s conversation about grassroots football development in Nigeria.
THE FINAL YEARS
Ilerika remained connected to football after his playing days.
His career with Stationery Stores stretched into the early 1980s, after which he became involved in football administration and coaching-related work. At the time of his death, he was serving as Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association.
He died on December 4, 2008, at the age of 59.
Sixteen years later, tributes continue to describe him with the same words:
Wizard.
Magician.
Master dribbler.
Legend.
THE LEGACY OF THE SOCCER WIZARD
Haruna Ilerika never had the opportunity to become a modern European superstar.
There was no social media.
No YouTube compilation.
No millions of television viewers watching every move.
No GPS tracking his dribbles.
No statistical database preserving every touch.
Yet somehow, his football survived.
It survived because people remembered what he made them feel.
The schoolboy who transformed Zumratul into Principals’ Cup champions.
The little left-footer who could embarrass bigger defenders.
The Stationery Stores idol who made Lagos football supporters fall in love with the game.
The Green Eagle who helped Nigeria win All-Africa Games gold.
The magician who scored twice against Egypt at the 1976 AFCON.
The footballer whose dribbling was so famous that his name became synonymous with entertainment.
That is the Haruna Ilerika story.
He may have left this world in 2008, but the football wizard remains alive in the memories of those who watched him.
And perhaps that is the highest honour a footballer can receive.
Not merely to be remembered for what he won — but to be remembered for how beautifully he played the game.
HARUNA ILERIKA — THE SOCCER WIZARD.
THE MASTER DRIBBLER.
THE MAGICIAN OF NIGERIAN FOOTBALL.
FOREVER A LEGEND.
