BREAKING: MUSTAPHA ABDULLAHI ELECTED NBBF PRESIDENT, DEFEATS OYEDEJI AND UGBOAJA
Abdullahi secures 40 votes as Ugo Udezue emerges Vice-President
Dr Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) following Thursday’s elective congress in Abuja, ushering in a new administration for Nigerian basketball.
Abdullahi, who serves as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, secured 40 of the 48 votes cast to defeat former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, who received eight votes. Former international Ejike Ugboaja did not record any votes.
His emergence brings an end to the eight-year leadership of outgoing president Musa Kida, who has led the federation since 2017.
In another development, Ugo Udezue emerged as NBBF Vice-President unopposed, having been the only candidate for the position.
ABDULLAHI PROMISES REFORMS AND GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT
Abdullahi’s emergence comes with expectations that the new administration will strengthen basketball structures across Nigeria, improve the organisation of domestic competitions and create more opportunities for young players.
Before the election, he presented a development agenda focused on reforms, grassroots basketball, improved player welfare, infrastructure and stronger commercial partnerships.
His administration is expected to work with state associations, clubs, coaches, players and other stakeholders to improve the sport’s development pathway, from grassroots participation to elite competition.
CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR NIGERIAN BASKETBALL
The new leadership faces several important tasks, including improving domestic league structures, securing sustainable funding, upgrading facilities and providing better welfare support for players and technical personnel.
Nigeria continues to produce talented basketball players and has enjoyed notable international success, particularly through the women’s national team, D’Tigress. Strengthening competitions and development opportunities at home will be important to sustaining that progress.
The new administration will also need to build confidence among basketball stakeholders and ensure transparent governance as it begins its four-year tenure.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE NBBF
With Abdullahi as president and Udezue as vice-president, attention will now turn to the federation’s plans for domestic competitions, youth development and the wider growth of basketball in Nigeria.
Stakeholders will be watching to see how the new leadership translates its promises into practical programmes that benefit players, coaches, clubs and aspiring young talents across the country.
